Report 2023

The quality of bathing water in the year 2023 was monitored and evaluated within the framework of the "Monitoring Program for the Quality of Bathing Water on the Coasts of Greece", which is prepared under the responsibility of the General Secretariat for Natural Environment and Water of the Ministry of Environment and Energy (Y.P.EN.) and the relevant Water Directorates of the Decentralized Administration. The program is co-financed by national resources and the European Union, within the framework of the NSRF 2014-2020.

During the implementation of the monitoring program, the requirements of the European Directive 2006/7/EC "regarding the management of bathing water quality", as incorporated into national legislation by JMD 8600/416/E103/2009 (356Β΄), are complied with. By decision of the Minister of Environment and Energy, it was determined that the bathing season for the year 2023 lasts five (5) months from 1 June to 31 October.

A total of 1,680 bathing waters are classified in the category of at least "sufficient quality" (including points of categories 1, 2 and 3). Of these:

  • 1,659 bathing waters are classified in the category of "excellent quality", of which
    3 are located in inland waters.
  • 17 bathing waters are classified in the category of "good quality", and are
    all located in coastal waters.
  • 4 bathing waters are classified as "sufficient quality".
  • None are classified as "insufficient quality".
  • 50 new bathing waters were not assessed.
  • 1 monitoring point was not assessed.
