  • Short-term pollution incidents for the 2023 bathing season

    For the swimming season of 2023, seven (7) short-term pollution incidents were recorded during the scheduled sampling of the country's monitoring network. The following table shows the region, the code and name of the coast, the date of occurrence and the date of the end of the short-term pollution, as defined in Directive 2006/7/EC.

  • 2022 Report

    The bathing water quality assessment was performed with statistical analysis, according to the provisions of article 4 and Annex I of the Directive 2006/7/EC, for the set of bathing water quality data compiled for 2022 in relation to that bathing season and the three preceding bathing seasons (2019‐2021).
     
    From the 1682 bathing waters, 1645 were assessed, as during the 2022 bathing season one (1) point wasn’t monitored and the minimum number of samples required by the Directive 2006/7/EC has not yet been collected for 36 new points. However, from the preliminary results of 2022 the concentrations of microbiological parameters remain below the respective criteria values of excellent quality.
    For the 1645 bathing waters, where assessed, the classification results are the following:
     
    • The total of 1634 bathing waters is classified as at least “sufficcient quality”.
    • From them 1624 bathing waters are classified as “excellent quality”. Three (3) of them are inland waters.
    • 17 bathing waters are classified as “good quality”. None of them are inland waters.
    • bathing waters are classified as “sufficient quality”.
    • None of bathing waters are classified as “poor quality”.
    • 36 new bathing waters are not assessed.
    • 1 bathing water is not assessed.

  • 2021 Report

    The bathing water quality assessment was performed with statistical analysis, according to the provisions of article 4 and Annex I of the Directive 2006/7/EC, for the set of bathing water quality data compiled for 2021 in relation to that bathing season and the three preceding bathing seasons (2018‐2020).
     
    From the 1683 bathing waters, 1634 were assessed, as during the 2021 bathing season one (1) point wasn’t monitored after June and the minimum number of samples required by the Directive 2006/7/EC has not yet been collected for 48 new points. However, from the preliminary results of 2021 the concentrations of microbiological parameters remain below the respective criteria values of excellent quality.
    For the 1634 bathing waters, where assessed, the classification results are the following:
     
    • The total of 1634 bathing waters is classified as at least “sufficcient quality”.
    • From them 1612 bathing waters are classified as “excellent quality”. Three (3) of them are inland waters.
    • 21 bathing waters are classified as “good quality”. None of them are inland waters.
    • 1 of bathing waters are classified as “sufficient quality”.
    • None of bathing waters are classified as “poor quality”.
    • 48 new bathing waters are not assessed.
    • 1 bathing water is not assessed.

    The bathing water quality assessment was performed with statistical analysis, according to the provisions of article 4 and Annex I of the Directive 2006/7/EC, for the set of bathing water quality data compiled for 2020 in relation to that bathing season and the three preceding bathing seasons (2017‐2019).
     
    From the 1634 bathing waters, 1620 were assessed, as during the 2020 bathing season one point wasn’t monitored and the minimum number of samples required by the Directive 2006/7/EC has not yet been collected for 13 new points. However, from the preliminary results of 2020 the concentrations of microbiological parameters remain below the respective criteria values of excellent quality. For the remaining 1620 bathing waters, the classification results are the following:
     
    • The total of 1620 bathing waters are classified as at least “good quality”. 
    • From them 1586 bathing waters are classified as excellent quality”. Three of them are inland waters.
    • 34 bathing waters are classified as “good quality”. None of them are inland waters.
    • None of bathing waters are classified as sufficient quality”.
    • None of bathing waters are classified as poor quality”.
    • 13 new bathing waters are not assessed.
    • 1 bathing water is not assessed.

    The bathing water quality assessment was performed with statistical analysis, according to the provisions of article 4 and Annex I of the Directive 2006/7/EC, for the set of bathing water quality data compiled for 2019 in relation to that bathing season and the three preceding bathing seasons (i.e. 2016‐2018).
     
    From the 1634 bathing waters, 1595 were assessed, as 39 points were monitored for the first time during the 2019 bathing season and the minimum number of samples required by the Directive 2006/7/EC has not yet been collected. However, from the preliminary results of 2019 the concentrations of microbiological parameters remain below the respective criteria values of excellent quality. For the remaining 1595 bathing waters, the classification results are the following:
     
    • The total of 1595 bathing waters are classified as at least “sufficient quality”.
    • From them 1564 bathing waters are classified as “excellent quality”. Two of them are inland waters.
    • 31 bathing waters are classified as “good quality”. One of them is inland water.
    • None of bathing waters is classified as “sufficient quality”.
    • None of bathing waters is classified as “poor quality”.
    • 39 new bathing waters are not assessed.

    The bathing water quality assessment was performed with statistical analysis, according to the provisions of article 4 and Annex I of the Directive 2006/7/EC, for the set of bathing water quality data compiled for 2018 in relation to that bathing season and the three preceding bathing seasons (2015‐2017).
     
    From the 1598 bathing waters, 1568 were assessed, as 58 points were monitored for the first time during the period from 2017 to 2018 and 30 of them have not been evaluated for 2018, since the minimum number of samples required by the Directive 2006/7/EC has not yet been collected. However, from the preliminary results of 2017 and 2018 it is evident that the concentrations of microbiological parameters remain below the respective criteria values of excellent quality. For the remaining 1568 bathing waters, the classification results are the following:
     
    • The total of 1568 bathing waters are classified as at least “good quality”. 
    • From them 1550 bathing waters are classified as “excellent quality”. Two of them are inland waters.
    • 18 bathing waters are classified as “good quality”, which one of them is inland water.
    • None of bathing waters are classified as “sufficient quality”.
    • None of bathing waters are classified as “poor quality”.
    • 30 new bathing waters are not assessed.

  • 2016 Report

    The 2016 report provides an assessment of bathing water quality on the basis of a statistical analysis, according to the provisions of article 4 and Annex I of the Directive 2006/7/EC, for the set of bathing water quality data compiled for 2016 in relation to that bathing season and the three preceding bathing seasons (i.e. 2013‐2015).

    1507 bathing waters were assessed of the 1542 bathing waters, which were included in the monitoring programme in Greece for 2016. 34 bathing waters sites were monitored for the first time in 2015 and were not evaluated since the minimum number of samples required by the Directive has not yet been collected. However, from the initial results of 2015 and 2016 the concentrations of microbiological parameters remain below the respective criteria values of excellent quality. One bathing water was not evaluated since monitoring was not been possible due to prevented access to that bathing water site.

    For the remaining 1507 bathing waters, the classification results are the following:

    • 1496 bathing waters are classified as “excellent quality”. 1495 of them are located in coastal waters and one in inland waters.
    • 10 bathing waters are classified as “good quality”. 9 of them are located in coastal waters and one in inland waters.
    • 1 bathing water is classified as “poor quality”, located in coastal waters.
    • None of bathing waters was classified as “poor quality”.

  • Bathing water quality 2016

    Βathing water quality assessment for 1.507 sites was completed and published of the 1.542 bathing water sites which were included in the monitoring programme in Greece for 2016. 34 bathing water sites were monitored for the first time in 2015 and were not assessed since the minimum number of samples required by the Directive 2006/7/EC has not yet been collected. Also one bathing water site in Lefkada was not assessed as was not monitored during the bathing season 2016 since the access to the coast was not possible due to landslips and cutting off the road throughout the area, which do not affect the quality of bathing water site, caused by the earthquake on 17 November 2015 in Lefkada.

    The bathing water quality assessment was carried out through statistical analysis of the bathing water quality data set from the year 2013 to 2016 by the Special Secretariat for Water of the Ministry for the Environment and Energy.

    In accordance with the provisions of the Directive 2006/7/EC regarding the management of bathing water quality, Greece provided the Commission with the results of the monitoring and the bathing water quality assessment for each bathing water site.

    In total, the monitoring programme includes 1.542 bathing water sites, 1.540 of them are located in coastal waters and the rest 2 bathing water sites are located in inland waters (lakes). According to the statistical analysis of the bathing water quality data set, the classification status for the 1507 bathing waters is the following: 1.496 bathing waters (99.27%) are classified as "excellent quality", 10 bathing waters (0.66%) are classified as "good quality", 1 bathing water (0.07%) is classified as "sufficient quality" and none of bathing waters is classified as "poor quality".

  • Monitoring of bathing water quality for South Aegean bathing sites 2017

    Bathing water quality for bathing sites of the Region of South Aegean for 2017 is monitored under the supervision of the Special Secretariat for Water of the Ministry of Environment and Energy based on the provisions of the Directive 2006/7/EC concerning the management of bathing water quality.

  • Bathing water quality 2015

    From the 1.542 bathing water sites which were monitored in Greece in 2015, bathing water quality assessment for 1.508 sites was completed and published since 34 bathing water sites were monitored for the firtst time in 2015.  

    The bathing water quality assessment was carried out through statistical analysis of the bathing water quality data set from the year 2012 to 2015 by the Special Secretariat for Water of the Ministry for the Environment and Energy.     

    In accordance with the provisions of the Directive 2006/7/EC regarding the management of bathing water quality, Greece provided the Commission with the results of the monitoring and the bathing water quality assessment for each bathing water. 

    In total, 1.542 bathing water sites were monitored, 1.540 of them are located in coastal waters and the rest 2 bathing water sites are located in inland waters (lakes). The 34 new bathing water sites were not assessed as the minimum number of samples required by the Directive 2006/7/EC has not yet been collected. Regarding the results of the bathing water quality assessment, the classification status for the bathing waters is the following: 1.499 bathing waters are classified as "excellent quality", 9 bathing waters are classified as "good quality", none of bathing waters are classified as "sufficient quality" or "poor quality".
